Luxury living in Charlottesville, Virginia

Emerald Hill Foyer

The Manor House

Two grand stairways rise along both walls, drawing your attention to the elegant cherry millworks. A guest coat room and a utility closet are hidden beneath the stairwells, rucked behind cherry bookcases. A large central arch leads to the conservatory while smaller arches provide access to the central halls. Twin bookcases are set beside doors which provide access to the dining room and to a study. A spacious bridge with a curved balcony spans the open, two-story area.

Passing through a leaded glass door across a granite threshold, the first room on the private side of the home is one of two offices, this one feminine. Illuminated cabinets with framed glass shelves display photos and collectibles. The wainscoting, crown molding, fireplace surround, and cabinetry treatments are especially beautiful in their high-gloss enamel finish.

The dining room displays an artistic rendering of early American life which can also be found in the White House. The scene was printed from the original 18th century French blocks. Opposite it, an arched recess keeps the breakfront from intruding into the room. A leaded glass door leads to the formal entry and to an attractive butler's pantry.

In tribute to Jefferson, the living room is octagonal. The twenty-foot ceilings are graced by massive ten-piece crown moldings. The fireplace, niches, and statuary surround feature architectural millworks from central Virginia's finest cabinet maker. Towering fourteen-foot Palladian windows provide views through four stately Ionic columns, past flowering cherries, to the pristine lake and emerald ridges beyond.

Relax in the inviting family area which is warmed by custom cherry cabinets. The fireplace boasts a granite hearth and surround as well as a carved cherry mantle. It is flanked by bookshelves set above storage cupboards. The media center was designed around a big-screen projection television. Four tall windows provide enticing views of the lake and pool. The covered colonnade extends the living space outside while also lessening the effects of the afternoon sun.

Beautiful cherry millwork is on display in the kitchen, wrapping around all four walls. The food preparation area features a Sub Zero refrigerator and freezer, two dishwashers, a compactor, and a Thermidor dual fuel commercial range with two ovens. There are two additional convection ovens and a built-in microwave. The laundry room is conveniently located adjacent to the kitchen and features the same granite and cherry treatments.

A grand central hallway opens to the master suite. Cherry bookcases frame the granite fireplace. Ten-piece dentil block crown molding and wainscoting are used throughout. French doors provide access to the north colonnade and offer a commanding view of the property, including sunsets over the lake, rolling ridges, and mountains. The master suite in this gorgeous Virginia real estate listing was designed to capitalize upon the private areas outside the home which include a spa, wisteria-entwined trellis, two reflecting pools, formal gardens and Green pavilion.

Oak floors transition to polished granite in the octagonal master bath. Eight cherry columns and arched millwork provide a dramatic setting for the twin vanities, granite shower and oval whirlpool tub with granite surround. The large Palladian window about the tub is centered on the formal garden's long reflecting pool and Greek pavilion, providing a breathtaking, and yet completely private, vista of the farm and grounds. Four symmetrical passageways lead to the master, to his and her closets, to the shower, and past a sitting area to his and her water closets.

The upstairs bedrooms were inspired by Monticello, and like Jefferson's home, they feature large studies flooded with natural light. Each was designed to accommodate a large writing desk, a computer center, copious bookshelves, and a comfortable reading chair. In the bedroom, massive cherry cabinets cover an entire wall, making it possible to personalize each room while still maintaining order. A lighted cherry dressing cabinet with beveled mirrors stands between multiple closets and the black-granite bath. The view is west, over the late and Blue Ridge.

A world unto itself, Emerald Hill's 4,000 square-foot entertainment floor entices you to view a movie in the theater, relax in the pub with its adjoining wine cellar, play pool in the great room, enjoy a game of cards in the library, exercise in the gym, simmer in the sauna, or play ping pong or pinball in the game room. The lower level is warmed by its oak floors, beveled wood wainscoting, custom cabinetry, brick fireplaces, and Belgium linen walls. It's the ideal place for social gatherings and family fun.

Six large storage rooms with ample shelving provide plenty of space for seasonal items, kitchen supplies, sports gear, and home related accessories.
